A family living in Menlo Park, CA, wanted to study the possibility of building an apartment/art studio on their property so that grandparents could come for long visits. After reviewing the complicated San Mateo County zoning code, we came up with three concepts to consider. Each carefully addresses privacy issues with the main house, the desire to turn away from the busy street, and the quality of living space for aging parents.
